Farmers’ meeting

It was sunny and hot morning. All farmers gathered at office for the meeting. Phase two chairperson, Patrick Khambadza started the discussion by reporting about the Fairtrade meeting that was in Cape Town {South Africa}.He said that him and Charles who represented Kasinthula learnt more from other stakeholders who attended that meeting from various organizations.

Farmers present at the meeting wanted to know some developmental projects, which other organizations have already implemented. “Primary school, clinic and buying TVS to the needy are some of the projects that our fellow organization has already implemented” replied the phase two chairperson. Exford Dimo advised the premium committee to abide by the FLO standards
and requirements so that Kasinthula should have a sustaining certificate on Fairtrade deal. Speaking at the meeting, I asked the Fairtrade premium committee to be competent enough so that Kasinthula can fully comply with FLO standards in all dimensions. Kasinthula Cane has 282 farmers and they participated that meeting.

A snake in the office
When the meeting was about to begin, it was so amazing when the female clerk Stella Mkomba got off while shivering. “A snake! A snake! In the office” she got off and was almost collapsing. The guard on duty was called to chase that snake out of the office. It was cobra. The guard chased it with long bamboo. The manager advised that guard not to kill or hut it. Its swollen abdomen seemed to have swollen something like a frog because there were frogs under the book shelves following the minimum weather as it sunny and hot being summer season.

A village headman punished
A school going girl aged 16 passed away in our neighboring village. The villagers suspected the village headman of killing that young girl magically (ufiti). The deceased family disclosed that the village headman was responsible for the girl’s death. The community agreed to force that village headman to dig the grave himself without any personal assistance. He took almost four (4) days to complete the task. It was so sad because the dead body got decayed for Chikwawa is very hot as this is summer in Malawi.
