I received information from the Kasinthula Cane Growers general manager that there shall be visitors on Fairtrade issues. On September, 25, and 26, 2007 one of the Twin Trading representative shall be at Kasinthula for two days training on capacity building for the premium administration. And some visitors from UK, Silverspoon one of the biggest customers of Kasinthula Cane sugar on Fairtrade deal. I being the Fairtrade Premium Committee secretary told the members to be grateful with the visiting of fair-trade cane sugar customers, because it encourages and access to development potentials.

Dead baby

A mad woman ran away with a dead baby. The mad woman had a baby and with time a baby got sick. But unfortunately she was used to carry a baby wherever she was going. The baby died and some people saw her forcing the dead baby to have a breast feeding. Relatives to a mad woman seized the dead body for home to have a burial ceremony. Whilst people (women) were crying a mad woman entered he house and snatched a corpse and ran away with it. The village headman ordered some men to arrest her for proper burial ceremony. She was arrested until the ceremony was over.

Fairtrade awareness (2)

I was asked to attend a phase one general meeting to address fairtrade awareness development progress to the general farmers. The phase one chairperson encouraged farmers to work so hard on their given activities such as weeding, fertilizer application, tail drain maintenance and many more.

On Fairtrade premium use he asked general farmers to decide the project to start soon after electrification project of Chinangwa village. I, being the Kasinthula Fairtrade Premium Committee secretary was asked to participate that meeting to update farmers’ awareness on fairtrade development progress and income.

Fairtrade awareness

It was cold and showering I left for Blantyre to find out the payment days for December exams as I failed to seat for September exams 2007. I was told have paid by November end.

When I was in Blantyre I received a call that there was a meeting for phase one committee and village headmen. I was called to address fairtrade awareness and development progress. I confirmed the committee members that for Kasinthula is a hired labour dependant then employees are also beneficiaries of the fairtrade premium. I told them that surrounding communities and workers are indirect beneficiaries through producers as direct beneficiaries. I also reported the FLO-Cert inspector to Kasinthula premium on Monday, September 10, 2007, I them that the inspection was quite fine. I preceded saying that our inspection this year was done by Christoph Klein of Germany and encouraged me to raise fairtrade premium awareness to employees and general farmers as well as surrounding communities.

Stolen bicycle

One of the phase two farmers arrested for being suspected of buying a stolen bicycle. The police vehicle had a man who stole the bicycle and revealed that a man basing in Chinangwa was the one who bought the bicycle.

Harvesting maize

Early morning around 5:30, my friend Alfred Butao got me that he wanted me to assist him to harvest his winter maize crop. At noon I was at Chinangwa Football Club ground to watch football match between Chinangwa and Namalindi Football Club. The match ended 1-1.

Robbers

When I was leaving for work in the morning my wife asked me some money for relish, but unfortunately I had no money. I told her just to borrow money from my sister if she had. I always used to tell her that it’s not each and every time that we can manage to buy relish because of the less I get as my payment.

At 1:40pm I received a call from Kasinthula Cane Growers’ general manager Brian Namata that I was supposed to rush to office because there were visitors from America. Those visitors wanted to meet and discuss with Fairtrade Premium Fund Committee. I being the Kasinthula Fairtrade premium secretary, I rushed to meet visitors. They asked me to tell and show them some of the projects that have been implemented through premium fund. I took them and show them some, but failed to see electrification project of Chinangwa village because they were late and rush to Blantyre.

Late afternoon around 6:30pm one of the Chinangwa basing boys was robbed on the way to Chinangwa from Dyeratu trading center. He was cycling and saw a person on front of him footing. When he was passing by a man he suddenly collapsed from his bicycle due to heavy hit of a bar to his forehead. Fortunately Henry struggled with a robber whilst calling people for a rescue. While they were struggling Henry was also hit by a friend of a robber, and took Henry’s bicycle and a new pair trousers that was clamped on the carrier.

Immoral behaviour

A man who set fire on my neighbour’s house was arrested at around 6am. The elder daughter of the arrested man was so furious with her father’s arrest. She bulled her mother for she was the one who reported to police. A lot of people criticized her for bulling her mother whilst her father was guilty for setting someone’s house on fire and is a big offence. The man was expected to appear before court to answer that immoral behaviour.

A married woman was expelled by his husband because of her immoral behaviour of having a secret lover. Many people are talking of her because that secret lover married a sister to her husband, then it was like she fell in love with her brother. Her husband has confirmed to marry another woman who can comply with married person behaviour. A secret lover to that woman is also a polygamous, has two wives. And other concerned women are not happy with her because HIV/ AIDs pandemic is a biggest challenge to social and economic development in Malawi especially through those malpractices.

House on fire

My neighbor’s house was set on fire at around 2am. When I was asleep I heard a knock at the back door of my house. I asked who was that and answered me by mentioning the name. I recognized the name and woke up. The man asked me to provide him with only 2 matchsticks. He told me that he just wanted to lit his cigar. Then the man left for his home almost 500m from my home within the village. Before I go back to my bed, I saw a sudden light from my neighbor’s house. Due to that burning light I saw a man who asked me matchsticks running away. Other neighbors woke and the man was caught. Nobody got injured because people tried to stop the fire. Was arrested by community police service and taken to village headman. The man is a heavy drunkard to the level that he fails to support his family. After being asked by the Village headman, he said that he set on fire to that house because the owner (a woman) was used to cater his wife whilst he is starving with hunger. The owner of the house was worried because is taking care of that man’s wife for he used to drink each and every time / every season.

My general manager informed me that there would be some visitors from America who scheduled to Kasinthula Premium Fund Committee on September 13-2007, at around 2pm for Fairtrade discussion issues. I being a Premium Committee secretary informed the general members about that meeting.

Working in the fields

Kasinthula farmers had their meeting from 8:00am to 12:30pm. Farmers were told to work so hard on their cane plots depending on their family members not hired labours.
