Wrong info

Around 1:00am my wife and I slept outside the house because it was so hot to sleep inside the house. The heavy blowing wind and started blowing and disturbed us. We entered the house, but still was uncomfortable for it was so difficult to get sleep due to the hotness.

My wife said that it could be so nice if electricity installment was in place on this summer period because we could have access to have air conditioner for comfortability.

When I was at work I received a call from my young brother that he received a call from Ntcheu district where my uncle leaves. He told me that uncle has passed away and was laid to rest on 8th Oct. it was so wonderful because I received a letter from that uncle on the very same day which was said that uncle was laid to rest. At that time my mother was just crying, and she stopped crying when I told her that I did not believe that uncle passed away because I received a letter from uncle on that day. I communicated one of the people who know where my uncle stays to tell us truly on that issue. A man went to uncle’s residence and called me to speak with the uncle. I asked uncle why was he said that was dead and he told me “I am still alive and healthier, who publicized me dead”

Another visit

It was a very hot day around 8:00am, Peter the sales director for Napier Brown one of the biggest Kasinthula sugar importers on Fairtrade deal visited Kasinthula and some of the projects implemented through premium. Peter had a brief discussion with Premium committee members and confirmed to buy more sugar from Kasinthula with an aim of promoting farmers and communities on implementation of sustainable development through premium provided. The chairperson was so grateful for Napier’s visit and encourage because it enhanced impoverished farmers and communities to have access to projects that otherwise government cannot implement for them.

Kasinthula meeting

I was asked to attend a phase one and phase two committees to update the Fairtrade premium. I was supposed to type all the updates, but I only had opportunity to type at lunch hour while the owner of the computer was at home for lunch. I worked all the day to make everything in place.

At 2pm Kasinthula Cane Growers employees participated a meeting conducted by the Board Chairman and Kasinthula management. On this meeting employees were encouraged to work hand in hand with farmers as owners of the organization.

Mother’s day

It was holiday, mothers day in Malawi. My wife advised me to buy some gifts for my mother inlaw and my mother. My mother inlaw thanked me for the gift I bought her and the same applies to my mother. On that day women are respected in Malawi for the well done job they did to update the social and human growth for the children.

Working on maize

I failed to attend church service because I was looking for my maize that was dried because goats and cattle were disturbing.

At around 3:30pm, I went to watch football match between Chinangwa FC and Namalindi FC that ended 0-0 draw. It was just social and kept youths busy entertained with sports rather than drinking and taking drugs.

Electrification done !

Following the implementation of electricity of Chinangwa village some 32 houses have already been started installing wiring. I went to stores to collect electrical equipment for eight houses. A lot of people are so happy with implementation of electricity through premium fund.

It was sunny and hot day while my family members that are sisters and brothers assisted me to harvest winter maize crop. We were so tired due to hotness on that day.

Paying for exams

For I failed to sit for September 2007 exams, due to the lack of fee I left for Blantyre to pay for Dec.2007 exams. I paid 75 pounds, that’s 15 pounds per subject for 5 subjects and processing fee amounting to 7 pounds. I was so pleased for paying exams fee because I have got access to sit for Diploma1 in Rural and Community Development. My friend was asking me how he could have access to start a course like what I am doing. I told him it’s easy to be committed to continue with education, but financial embarrassment is only a barrier to sustainable education.

More overseas visits

Candico one of the biggest Kasinthula sugar buyers on Fairtrade deal visited and discussed Kasinthula Premium Committee members. He assured members that Candico is expected to import over 2000 tones of Kasinthula’s sugar on Fairtrade. Members told Candico that we appreciate the way imported sugar is helping Kasinthula farmers and surrounding communities in implementing sustainable developments like drilling boreholes, buying bilharzias medicine for the clinic assisting community and electrification project of Chinangwa village.

After Candico visiting David, the researcher met the premium committee members. David asked several questions to the members assisted by me in interpreting English-Chichewa language.

Fairtrade update

Members were meeting at 2:25pm. The current chairperson asked me to take lead of meeting in various issues to be discussed. I reported on Chinangwa electrification project progress as one of the responsible person. I also informed members that Brian assigned me to conduct Fairtrade awareness to employees and farmers. As an outgoing premium committee secretary I advised current members to be committed to what I have been doing for them to capturer much better on Fairtrade issues. I also informed members about Candico visit on Thursday, Oct. 04, 2007 at around 8am.

PhD on Kasinthula

David Philips who is doing a project on PHD from Newcastle University on Fairtrade impacts discussed with me in various areas concerning fairtrade issues. He asked me several questions concerning his project and impacts on fairtrade especially at Kasinthula Cane Growers.

At lunch I went with Philip, David and Brian at Matechanga motel where we discussed some other issues like Malawi’s weather, sports and Kasinthula’s vision on sugar production.
