Most of the farmers went to Nchalo trading centre almost 28 kilometers from Kasinthula to draw their payments. Most of them were just complaining due to very little money they were receiving. The money is enough comparing to those people who are not cane farmers, but the commodities prices are so high. For my own case, after drawing my salary I bought washing soap, sugar, cooking oil and some relish but the remaining was almost half of the total salary. The remaining was just enough for transport to Blantyre. It was so painful. The living cost is now so expensive. Most of people do not have breakfast and or poor lunch/ supper.
Alfred cycled to Nchalo. When I arrived at Nchalo, I found my friend Alfred already there. He told me that he wanted to save some money, which could used to cover transport.
As paraffin had been scarce for almost 4 months Alfred and I agreed to buy it because it was only available at Nchalo. Paraffin is our biggest source of light mainly in rural areas. Alfred bought five liters and too bought five liters. Due to the scarcity of paraffin in Malawi, most the people had been using diesel as one source of light on domestic use.
