Attended funeral ceremony

Though I was not feeling good, I left for the work to pay an excuse to attend funeral ceremony of one of the Kasinthula Cane Growers’ farmers. Many people attended that ceremony. After burial ceremony, I left for home while so tired of sickness. At home, I took some pain killer drugs, but still I was not feeling ok especially at night.

Down with fever

I was not feeling good. I was down with fever. A friend who knocked off from work came to cheer me. That friend was not recognizing that I was at home. He was just passing by my house. My wife called him. She told him that I was around. He came and apologized for he was just passing by without knowing that I was sick.

Five young boys caught for stealing sugar canes. Those boys went to fetch water using a farm cart. After drawing water, they agreed to steal some canes belonging to Kasinthula Cane Growers Limited. Their two containers and the bicycle were seized and the stolen canes. Most of the surrounding communities’ children used to enter the field campus at odd hours to steal sugar canes. Those found are forced to pay for the stolen canes.

A cane farmer passed away

When I just woke up my mother got me with sad message that our grand father, Mr Kamanga passed early hours at around 4am. It was so sad having lost the second farmer only this month.

Some foot sores made me not to move because it was too painful. I did not move the whole day. My wife went to fetch some relish at the garden. I consulted a certain doctor who advised me to get him at the hospital for medicare.

I tried moving in the late afternoon. I went to meet Alfred at his residence. With those sores I was feeling some painful as fever. My wife bought me some painkillers, but did not assist. In the morning, my wife had to prepare warm water for me to take a bath.

Compliance with Fairtrade standards

After completed flow of goods, work plan formulation and Fairtrade awareness schedule plan, I submitted the completed tasks to the Administrator who is currently working hand in hand with Fairtrade Premium Committee. I told him that him that after this year’s work plan and budget I should go for leave especially early March. I asked the Fairtrade Premium Chairperson to call for a meeting to discuss much on this year’s developmental projects to be implemented through Premium fund.

It was still sunny and hot up to 35 Degrees Celsius. I knocked off at noon. When going home I boarded the accountant’s vehicle via Dyeratu trading centre. I proceeded home cycling. I got Alfred at his residence and his wife gave me a cucumber and fried maize. Afterwards I left for home and found my wife already prepared some food with beans as relish. My wife welcomed me and said that the food was already on table. It was nice and enjoyed it.

No breakfast or lunch

It was sunny morning and some patches of cloud. Around 5:30 morning, my wife woke me up and informed me that there was nothing to take as breakfast. I advised her to prepare white maize flour porridge only for the two school going children even without sugar provided they take something for energy. Even my school-going children didn’t prefer that porridge of only salt as condiment. I was so angry having children going to school without taking good food.

At lunchtime, I did not go home for I understood that at home there was no relish. I had no lunch instead I just proceeded with my work. My friend Peter brought me some bananas after he knew my problem. I was still preparing some Fairtrade Premium work plan template, which was formulated by Fairtrade Labeling Organization. I am not a Fairtrade Premium committee member, but my roles are many for I understand most of the FLO standards. I do facilitate, guide and advise the premium committee, encourage and support, transfer knowledge and train farmers and workers’ representatives and others.

Ate nsima with vegetables

At lunch hour, I went home to have food. My wife told me that the relish was vegetables, which she fetched at our own garden. She added groundnuts as condiments. It was nice meal though it was not real balanced diet, but provided I felt satisfactory of taking food. Most of the times when people are financially embarrassed, they don’t prefer type of food or relish. Women could just fetch some vegetables within nearby bushes.

Cattle destroyed maize at my garden. I was at home nursing the baby, then came a man and told me that there were some cattle in my garden grazing and destroying my maize cobs. I was expected to harvest in early March, but those cattle made me loosing hope of having bumper yield. All efforts and inputs costs have just waste. When I came back home and told my wife how cattle destroyed our maize she was so worried. “Why can’t you go to refer this matter at police so that the owner should fund us?” My wife asked me. I told her that the issue should at first stage be referred to the village headman for verification.

Tired of demonic plane

The young boy aged 10 revealed that was tired of being a demonic plane pilot. Two men and a woman taught that young boy how to fly demonically. When revealing, the boy said that was tired of being a pilot. He revealed those three people of enforcing him to kill his mother. The boy had been refusing and decided just to step down and revealed to let those people known. Teaching children how to fly and eat human fresh demonically has been increasing.

Farmers’ general meeting

It was sunny and I left for the work at 6am. At 8am, farmers in collaboration with traditional leaders had a general meeting. On that meeting, various decisions and resolutions were made. The trustees reported on what they resolved at the board as well as at the trust. The trustees reported the phase three operational discussion progress. The phase three is an extension to Kasinthula Cane Growers plantation with an aim of giving the farmers access to own and be beneficiaries to that productivity. European Union pledged to provide 2.5m Euros to implement this project. “With the phase three as an extension we expect to increase our sugar volume especially at fairtrade deal.” I said commenting on what the phase two chairperson reported.

After that meeting I continued working up to knocking off hour, 5pm. I was arriving home at 5:45pm, and found my wife preparing some food for me.

Attended the deceased’s house

I did not go to work because I wanted to attend the discussion at the deceased house. The village headman and other elders discussed much on whom to posses the house and continue taking hold of the cane farming. The brother to deceased was advised to take hold of the house and run the cane plots as the owner was doing. It was also through the next of memorandum. Thereafter I went to see my garden.

Yamikani, a farmer laid to rest

Early morning my brother and I went to graveyard, where there were already more people to dig the resting place for the fellow farmer. The deceased was one of my cousins. While at graveyard, it started raining heavily. When people were going to graveyard, everybody was rained. It was so sad to put that cane farmer to rest. His soul rest in peace. My mother inlaw and her three fellow women attended that ceremony.

Watched Africa Cup of Nations’ finals. Alfred and I left at 6pm for Dyeratu to watch the finals. The match started at 7evening and was so crucial. Within the hall, we were watching that match people were divided in supporting. Others were supporting Egyptians while some were for Cameroonians. It was so pleasing to those who were supporting Egypt. We were going home at around 9:45 night.
