Fairtrade flow of goods

The general manager directed me to update fairtrade flow of goods for the year 2006 to 2008. I was busy and finished it within one time. Kasinthula sugar bought on fairtrade deal seemed to increase more rapidly and the projects to be implemented are going to be so effective. The sales for only 2007 seemed to be almost the total volume of Kasinthula sugar on fairtrade deal. While I was doing flow of goods, general manager Brian provided me with the December version of standards for Hired Labour. He advised me to understand those FLO standards for easy clarification when raising awareness to the farmers and employees.

Advised Kasinthula Fairtrade Premium Committee, to meet and discuss the 2008 sustainable development projects to be implemented. I, as a Fairtrade Premium Committee advisor appealed to the members to meet and resolve in collaboration with the general farmers to decide the projects to be accomplished through premium fund.

Had lunch at parents’ inlaw. When I was going home for lunch, I decided to visit my parents’ inlaw. I enjoyed nice meal. After the meal, it started raining. I had to wait until it eased.

Received sad message. I received a sad message from home Chinangwa that one of the cane sugar farmers passed away. That farmer was very young person and was expected to boost. His house was one of the electrical installed houses. After lunch, I just left for home due to that sad message.

Had thobwa as breakfast

Thobwa is prepared as porridge, but is so soft. In the morning, my wife told me that instead of preparing tea, thobwa could be nice as breakfast. I took it and then left for work.

Did not take lunch. It was so sunny and had no money that I could use to buy something to eat as lunch. For it was so sunny, I also failed to go home for lunch. It’s 4.5km from home to work place and cycling was so painful.

When I got home, my wife was not around. I just took nsima with dry fish as relish. After taking nsima, I went to see my garden.

Minibus fares rising

Minibuses are the major mode of transport in Malawi from city to even rural areas. Government introduced the new sitting capacity as one of the factors to reduce accidents. The minibus owners protest against that introduction and went to court for injunction. The court wrote off that injunction after giving the minibus owners some months to decide and comply with that condition. The new sitting capacity stated that there should be three people per one row not four as was before. Government enforced that sitting capacity to be followed by all minibus owners and instead those owners risen the fares by 60 percent, which is too much expensive especially for me to go in Blantyre twice every weekend for studies.

A man fought his daughter. When I was taking bath at around 6am, I heard somebody crying. After a couple of time, I saw people gathering at a cane farmer’s residence. Some eyewitnesses told me that, that cane farmer was fighting against his daughter over maize issues. The man is a polygamous and had nothing in terms of food at his junior wife. The man wanted to seize the only 20kgs of maize from his senior wife. The daughter refused him from taking that only maize at the household. The man did not accept his daughter to refuse him and started fighting. At that time, the senior wife was not around. Most of the people reprimanded that man for wanted to take food from one family leaving it starving and made the other family surviving.

Chiefs and Traditional leaders for Kasinthula Cane Growers in collaboration with the main body committees had a meeting on which they resolved various issues and were told the Board and Trust resolutions. Their meeting started at around 9am and they were winding up at 5pm.

Watching Africa Cup of Nations. When I got home from the work, my friend Alfred got me home. He reminded me that I should not forget watching football match on TV at Dyeratu Trading centre. The match started at 7 evening.

A leave request

When I was about to knock off, I told my boss that I was tired working all the year round and I went to rest for I am so tired. My boss admitted me to on leave, but he wanted to know if I completed doing all fair-trade issues, which were intended to be done before February end. “If you have finished compiling all what you were doing you can go for leave but if not try to accomplish then you go”. My field manager said before documentary approval. My boss continued saying that there are remaining corrective actions, which need committed person to work so hard with an aim of complying.

Three farmers spent two days hiding, in trading centre while taking beer. Those three men are married. One them sold his two cattle and with two friends went to Dyeratu trading centre to take beer. When I was going home from the work, I met a wife to the man who sold his cattle while looking for him. “Have seen my husband,” A woman asked me. I told her that I was coming from the work and had not seen him. At 6pm I met the woman and I asked her if she met her husband, but unfortunately she told me that she did not meet him. My friend Alfred also told me that the man had accompanied the other two men who are also cane farmers.

Went to bed late. Since I am preparing to do diploma 2 on Rural Community Development I already started studying for this year’s curriculum. It is too much costing to have studied for over two hours as I am required to do, but the use of a candle on daily basis for lighting is so expensive. The scarce of paraffin has hit the rural people who use paraffin as source of light. I only study whenever I managed to buy candle.

Did not got to work

Early hours of this day at 3am, I was feeling fever. I told my wife to take another blanket to add on top of what I already covered. My wife prepared some warm water for me to take a bath. After taking bath, I went back to bed until 8am. I sent a message to my boss that I failed to attend the job due to sickness. I recovered before noon after taking some painkillers.

At around 3pm, I went to see my maize at the garden where seem to be boosting if no animals destroy until harvesting in Early April. When arrived at the garden I found some two cattle about to enter my garden. I took them to the owner and cautioned him to take care of his cattle.

In the evening, I had supper with vegetables as the only relish. Even though vegetables are to be taken as one of the supplementary to relish, but in financial embarrassing situation we just take only vegetables as relish for the day provided we take nsima for energy.

Poor breakfast

I woke up at around 5:35am and deciding myself what to take as a breakfast. My wife was asleep and some men were passing by going to their various working places. Every working day I am supposed to work up to noon, which is at lunchtime. It was so painful for I didn’t take enough food as a breakfast. I took porridge without sugar and I did not prefer it. I just took that poor porridge for the sake of having energy to work.

When I go to the office, I just spent the whole day without working because the owner of the computer, which I was using, was too using it. Since I was advised to work at the office to compile the fair-trade issues like compiling invoices, updating premium income and providing awareness to the employees and fellow farmers there has been a problem for the use of a computer. The fair-trade tasks are the continuous work, which need daily updating hence computer is very much important to use.

Pastor brought to the church naked

It was showering and patches of sunshines. At a certain church while, Christians were on a service day, they just wondered that their pastor was just brought before them naked. “I have brought your pastor on your presence so that you know that this one is not a pastor but a thief”. The man said on presence of the Christians. That pastor was red handed while he was stealing green maize cobs. The owner of he garden just decided to take the pastor to his own church because it was service day. All women got off the church for they were so ashamed. The wife to the pastor was just crying and some women console her for what her husband did. Most of Christians promised to defect from the church because their pastor had disgraced the church’s dignity.

Enjoyed the meal. I went to Dyeratu trading to buy relish. I bought some vegetables and fresh fish. My wife was not expecting that we could have such type of good relish because I had no money when I was leaving home for the market. “Where have you found the money used to buy this good relish?” My wife answered. I told him that my friend Alfred borrowed me Mk150.00, which I used to buy that relish.

Man chased from the family

For so many times the husband had been fishing instead of going to work on agricultural services as most of the Malawians depend on agricultural production for survival. A wife to that man and his mother inlaw decided to chase him. When he came from fishing as usual, he just wondered that there was no food for him. A couple of time he saw his wife and her mother taking off his clothes from the house and confirmed him that he had to leave the home and remember where he came from. His mother inlaw threw those clothes into the nearby river. The river stretches down where the man’s home is. The wife phoned the husband’s sister and informed her that she must be arlet for her brother’s clothes were down floating towards their home. The man cut maize plants. However, he was doing fishing, but he was sometimes using what he was earning after fish sales assisting farm activity costs. The man went to the garden and cut all maize plants then left for his home village.

Pastor divorced his wife and married

A pastor of a certain church divorced his wife without proper reasons and married another woman. This pastor had been preaching and teaching the word of God. In his teachings, the pastor had been encouraging oneness in a family between a man and woman. People in Chinanagwa village have wondered the way this pastor had shown inspite of what he taught about oneness. The wife is staying alone while the man is staying with another woman.

A friend brought me one big cucumber, which my wife and I enjoyed. The man was coming from his garden and he just called me. “Do you have cucumbers or your cucumbers are ripened?” He asked me. Then I told him that did not have even one or ripened ones. That friend gave me that big cucumber that could weigh about 2kgs.
