Several visits

Before taking breakfast my sister her only one son came home to see my family. “I just wanted to say bye because I am leaving for Ngabu. My sister Joyce who works under Ministry of Health came home on 7th November 2008 to attend the initiation ceremony of our elder brother’s daughter. The ceremony started on Friday evening. At social status the female initiation ceremony is conducted by women only, no man is involved. My brother provided a bull for the women to enjoy as relish.

Alfred and his wife visit
Alfred called me when I was at the office and expressed his visit appointment together with his wife. As we had a lot to do about Fairtrade issues we knocked of late in the afternoon. I was arriving home at 6:37pm. I found Alfred and his wife already at home. “Welcome I hope my wife has already welcomed you on my behalf”. I said. We had supper together at home and they left at 9. When they left I started studying.

Assistant referee bullied

I woke up early and cleaning the home compound before taking bath. After breakfast, that was boiled potatoes I left for Dyeratu deport. I boarded at 6:12am. At Kamuzu bridge (road block), all passengers got the minibus to step on the disinfectant that government directed due to the animal outbreak foot and outbreak in Shire Valley where the entire Malawi depends on meat. Government ordered all Shire Valley butchers not to slaughter and transport meat to other parts of Malawi especially Blantyre. I arrived at the school at 8:26am. We had a Project Management and Sociology lecturers and knocked off at noon hour.

Assistant referee bulled
Mitole FC ground is situated along the Blantyre Chikwawa road just 300m from Kamuzu Bridge from Blantyre. When I was in the minibus after crossing the bridge I saw people gathering at the ground. I asked the driver to drop me. Mitole was playing against Nchalo United. Nchalo United was leading by a goal to nil. Being the home ground, Mitole supporters were angry. The referee responsible declared free kick to be taken by Nchalo United following an assistant referee demand. It was a dangerous area that Nchalo could score, that made Mitole supporters disagree with that free kick. Most of the supporters rushed where the lines man was and bulled him. The match was about to end about 20 minutes remained on the second half. The match continued after referees team and Mitole officials’ negotiations. About 3 minutes to end the match, one of the Mitole defender was dribbled that made an opportunity for Nchalo U almost scoring. Mitole defender just dived at the ball as a goal keeper. The referee responsible ruled hand ball and penalty to Nchalo and scored. The match ended 2-nil in favour of Nchalo United.

Furious passengers

It was hot morning. I asked my wife to look for someone who could lift me to Dyeratu deport. With my books at the deport two minibuses left me because the were already filled up. I boarded the third minibus from Nchalo. I was arriving Blantyre at around 9am. I found my fellow students already in class and were learning. The new lecturer who just came with Sociology taught us. The entire class was so happy the way he was lecturing. We had a lunch break at noon. We turned up for the afternoon classes at 1:30pm and knocked off at 5pm.

Furious passengers
When I knocked off, I left for the deport to board Blantyre Chikwawa minibus. There was only one person who remained to board so that it could take off. I boarded and a couple of minutes the minibus took off. As soon as it took off most of the passengers complained at the speed. The driver was advised but to reduce speed but it did not hold any more water. Most of the accidents happened due to drivers’ relaxation. He was threatened to inform the road block police officers for that life threatening driving.

Forced to walk naked

I was just studying in the afternoon at around 3:30pm. Two men got me at my house one with pang knife and with a bow and arrow. “Did you see some crossing by yesterday or today?” they asked me. Those men told me that their cattle were stolen two days before. “How many were they?” I asked them. “There were 16 cattle.” They replied. I felt sorry because all those cattle were a lot of money. They left my home and proceeded with their move towards the Shire River. At around 5pm, I saw children flocking at a certain place. My friend phoned me to see what was happening. I went there to witness that development. It was so shameful because the thief was forced to publicly walk and bulled while he was naked. He further explained that they were two but his friend fled.

Clinic extension contractor meets members

It was sunny, windy and hot about 39 degrees Celsius. Most of the members turned up at late around 3pm. When asked they paid an excuse that it was sunny and too hot. The meeting started with a prayer said by the Fairtrade Premium vice chairperson. The main agenda of the meeting was to review the effectiveness of the clinic extension project, which is premium funded. The contractor was asked to work so hard to finish the project as soon as possible for the fear of the failure due to rain season which has already started in upper areas of Malawi.

Discussions on Kasinthula clinic extension

Following the Kasinthula Fairtrade Premium Quality Management Team resolution to advise the Fairtrade Premium Committee about the quality effectiveness of the clinic extension project the committee was called to have some discussions. Members gathered at 2pm. Premium members advised to follow the quality approach of premium-funded projects. When concluding members agreed to call the contractor responsible to answer in other areas and review the efficiency of the project. It was agreed that he might come the day.

Quality Management System

Early morning around 5am, I woke up and took bath. I left for the work doing irrigation. When I got at the office, he reminded me about an assignment Doreen Chanje of Twin Trading who had been training the Fairtrade Quality Management System team. I told the Trust Administrator that the other team members were to be called so that whatever to should be contributed by all members. The Quality Management System team is comprised of five members. The duty of this team as advised by Doreen is to meet the quality production and services of Kasinthula Fairtrade Premium Funds by advising, supporting and encouraging the Fairtrade Premium Committee in all aspects. Twin Trading, one of the Kasinthula sugar buyers on Fairtrade deal played important role on providing capacity building to Kasinthula members and management to produce quality services, as International Standards requires.

No breakfast

I woke up early morning at around 4am preparing to leave for home. I did not take breakfast because my wife said that there was no sugar that she might prepare breakfast. At 8am, I paid an excuse to temporarily leave for home to have breakfast. When I took my bicycle, I saw Kasinthula vehicle coming towards where I stood. The driver told me that Trust administrator wanted me at the office. I boarded that vehicle. At the office, the administrator told me about the meeting to be conducted by the management.

KCGL management called Fairtrade meeting
Following the Fairtrade standards and requirements, the Kasinthula Cane Growers management called for meeting that started at 2pm. General Manager, Bryan Namata advised members attended to be Fairtrade standards compliant. He encouraged the premium committee that it has the vital role to play on farmers and employees behalf in Fairtrade issues. He urged some members who seem not to abide by the Fairtrade standards to resign because withdraw of Fairtrade certificate would leave innocent people having no access to sustainable development projects in surrounding communities. Many members commended what Bryan said. The meeting ended at 5:26pm with a prayer said by Mr. Joseph Kamangira.

Visiting a disadvantaged old woman

Sunday morning I was at work doing irrigation. Most of our canes are improving due to continuous working with an aim of improving the canes production. My wife reminded me about the visit to Dembo where this old woman is basing. It happened that soon after writing examinations in 1999, I decided to marry Regina. Before official marriage, it was unfortunate that she passed away. It was so bitter to life. She had no both parents because I just understood that they passed away some years ago. Her mother died two year before I met her at Secondary school on fourth year. Regina was brought up by her old grandmother who is currently basing at Dembo, a ten (10) km away from my village, Chinangwa.

Since Regina died I have been visiting her grandmother because her three children passed away and she has nobody to assist her. Early June this year the old grandmother to late Regina called me at home. She complained about scarcity of various life sustaining basic needs. “My son I am starving food and clothing as well blankets as it is winter season” she told me at my home. My wife felt sorry about that. That is why this day we decided to visit her. When we reached there she was very happy. She welcomed us warmly. My wife sat beside her while the grandmother carrying Elod Kafaukoma junior. I left for nearby shops where I bought soap and other necessities.

We left for home at 5pm since 12noon. On the way back my wife said that she was very sympathetic the way this grandmother is living. “She was just crying that when she always see me she commemorate Regina. I advised her not to worry much for we shall keep on visiting her on monthly basis. It when you were at the shop” told me my wife, Bertha on left side. “The daily life cost is too hard to her because she can not even manage to indulge herself on agricultural production”. I replied Bertha while cycling back home. In a grass thatched house but very old really she starves. I too felt sympathy when she disclosed that the only grandson, 20aged and believes in drinking beer every time bulled her. Though she referred the matter, he was not taken for punishment at police station.

Chinangwa FC lost by 8 goals

It was sunny and hot as well heavy blowing wind. The coming team was so happy because it conquered Chinangwa at its home. Soon after my arrival from school, Blantyre I proceeded to the ground to watch the match between Chinaangwa FC and Supuni FC. Chinangwa hosted Supuni. It was so sad when the coming team scored eight goals on presence of Chinangwa based people. I was about to leave for home but I failed because I am a team manager to Chinangwa. Chinangwa FC coach Joseph Goche was about to cry when his team was loosing. When asked what was going on for his team’s lost Joseph remained quite.

Heavy and dusty wind
When I was coming back home from school Blantyre I saw dusty that rose in the atmosphere. I was inside the minibus in Shire Highlands just on meander Chikwawa Blantyre road. I was able to see the Shire valley where I live affected by that wind. As usual when Shire Valley is about to experience rain there should heavy blowing wind.

Guards stole maize
I left for home leaving irrigators at the fields I am in charge applying water to the canes’ fields. It was around 8am. I was after breakfast. When reached home, I saw many gathered at my parents’ house. I deflected my way to witness what was going on. When arrived where people gathered I saw two guards who were on duty protecting farmers arrested. They were caught by one of the farmers who was guarding his maize. That farmer suspected the bag one the guards carried. It was later revealed that they stole from my parents’ garden. They were taken to the Chinangwa village headman where they admitted that suspicion. It was fortunate that they were to have their salaries the following day. The final judgment was that their salaries were to be deducted to punish them and were dismissed.

Elod Kafaukoma junior had bath
“It was so windy just the last thirty minutes. You can see junior is very dirty due to the dust. It was terrible as if the house especially the roof was to be blown off”. My wife said while caring the baby by taking bath. After taking bath junior had to take breast feeding. Her mother took bath when she advised me to care Jr. My friend Alfred Butao admired the way Junior was dressed and seemed always to be happy. Alfred took Junior on his bicycle as the way of nursing him while I was discussing with two visitors who came home.
