One a whirl wind ruined her house leaving her helpless. She sued the issue to Chinangwa village headman. While village headman settled that matter, she also complained that she had a non stop blood loss (monthly period).

My wife taken to hospital

Irrigation of the cane fields always starts at 6am. I supervised all fields I am in charge of. At around 9am, I left for home to take breakfast. Unfortunately, my wife was not around. I bought a bottle of fanta with chintuwitsa (had bread). After taking these as breakfast, I left again for the field. When I was moving along field 209’s feeder, I noticed the slow movement of water. I asked Eliza (woman irrigator) about the slow movement of that water. She told me that there was water problem mainly from the River side (pump). Instead of knocking off at 2pm as usual, we knocked off at 12noon following the completion of the water.

My wife went to hospital
When I got home from the work, I found my young sister nursing Junior (my baby). She told me that my wife left for the hospital following the fever she was feeling. She said that she not feeling ok that was why she was advised to leave for Chikwawa hospital for medical care. She was coming back home with a hired cyclist whom she paid Mk100.00 from the hospital. Late in the afternoon, Alfred’s wife came home to assist her with kitchen chores.

No electricity
Chinangwa people are so adapted to electricity use. We it is worrisome to experience blackout since Tuesday evening. We are failing to listen to radioes, watching movies on TV and lights for houses. Since the transformer burst though it was maintained but did not assist much. It was only for one day use just soon after maintenance.

Bought maize seeds

When I was at the work I paid an excuse to leave for Nchalo to buy maize seeds. I bought 5kg at Mk1,750.00. I boarded minibus from Nchalo to Dyeratu. At Dyeratu I received a call form Bertha my wife reminding me about relish. I bought goat meat at Mk300.00 per 1kg. after buying that meat I looked for quality tomatoes and mangoes. My wife was very happy with the goat meat because we had some months without taking it following government’s restriction of not selling meat for there was afoot and mouth disease out break.

Drunk brother slept out

My brother, who gave up taking beer two years ago, started taking beer and slept at the bar. I received a call from his wife asking me if I saw him in Dyeratu when I was going home from the work. I told her that I did not know where he was. It was very furious to his wife when she was looking forward to receiving him in the evening. When he was responding his wife’s call, the wife noticed that he was drunk. She was so worried because the brother was troublesome whenever he takes. The wife was proud of his giving up. The wife got tired of calling him throughout the night. He came back home at 8am while drunk.

Maize planting
Following the little rain that fell in Chinangwa and Mvula villages, my wife, Bertha encouraged me to start planting maize. I advised her to wait for the enough rainfall but she still continue demanded me to plant. We selected the quality seeds for planting. She prepared thobwa that we took at the garden as our full breakfast. We knocked off at 11am and turned again at 3pm up to 5:25pm. We did not finish the garden because it was late in the afternoon.

Only two villages had rainfall

It was hot and patches of cloud morning. At around 9am it rained but not enough that farmers who depend on rainfall can plant. It later discovered that it was only Chinangwa and Mvula villages which received that rain. They were declared as fortunate villages.

Sister inlaw visit
The cousin and sister to my wife came home in the afternoon for visit from their home, Lauji village. They footed from Lauji about 5km distance. I had no money that they could use for transport when they were returning.

Payment failed

When I was at work supervising irrigation I heard my fellow supervisor saying that he was supposed to leave for the bank to draw his payment. I advised him to verify from the office if the payment was ready at the bank. He thought that I was just discouraging him. Later a couple of minutes came across a farmer who was from the office. “I was going to bank, but the accountant has advised me that the money is not deposited in our accounts but Monday on 22nd December 2008 shall be reality”. The farmer explained to us. Most of the farmers complained because they prepared to draw their advances so that they could buy some necessities in preparation of this festival.

Did not go to school

It was showering morning. I took bath in preparation to leave for Blantyre to attend classes. Before leaving, I called my lecturer about this day’s classes who advised me that due to just ended examinations all lecturers were on holiday.

Henry Nzengeza, my friend got me home while I was taking a nap just soon after lunch. He asked me if I knew that there was a football match between Mitole FC and Tigers FC. I told him that I had transport problem from home to Mitole ground about 6km distance. “I am going to use my bicycle. If you are prepared we can leave now because it is about to kick off” Told me Henry. We left at 2pm and arrived Dyeratu (Mitole ground when the match was about to kick off. The coming team’s hit man scored soon after kick off. It was a shock to Mitole. Before first half end, Mitole scored through its short but tough striker. It was 1-1 when they were having a break. In the second half, Tigers scored two goals left the host felt as was not its home advantage on the presence of the funs.

Humphrey was one of the potential farmers who based in Chinangwa village. His three brothers and two sisters passed away in past years. He was the sixth child to pass away on their family. Only two last born brothers are alive. May his soul rest in peace!

When we were about to enter graveyard, we heard a terrible sound like a thunder for it was showering. It was so surprising when we heard that it transformer that burst. We had no electricity. Hose who witnessed said that there was a heavy smoke and that the old woman who was sleeping inside her house just 50m from the transformer was shocked and about to faint. Alfred and I went to see the transformer when we got home from the graveyard. I phoned general manager, Brian who communicated ESCOM officials who promised to come the following day.

Fellow farmer passed away

It was very amazing and sorrowful that hearing that the fellow farmer has passed away. It was very sad because he is very young as I am myself. When I heard that Humphrey Nyapigoti allowed me to take photo of his family together with his children while he was sick it was so sad to many farmers and the entire family. Elod, being a friend to Humphrey, I am so sad, my friend whom I visited two weeks ago with his children passed away. “{Rest in peace”) Humphrey.
