Africa Programme
On top of our commitment to Fairtrade we'll give at least 15% of our profits to our Ubuntu Africa Programme
Ubuntu is a give-and-take concept and we passionately believe in sharing our success with the people who are the very soul of the company: the farmers and their families growing the sugar cane, and the people of Malawi.
The money will be used to
- Support the sugar producers and their communities
- Encourage projects showing real entrepreneurship and creative ways to tackle poverty
Our very first project, which embodies what we will try to achieve with the Ubuntu Africa Programme, is our association with Elod.
Elod's blog
Elod is a sugar cane farmer from Kasinthula who, on top of his farming duties, is studying Rural Development in Blantyre, the main commercial centre of Malawi. And a huge commitment it is, both in terms of time and money involved (the cost of studying is equivalent to a full year's salary), and especially considering that Elod just got married and has a wife and young child to support.
We have been really moved by Elod's dedication and hard work and we have offered to support him financially for his studies. In exchange Elod enthusiastically accepted to write a daily blog about his life in Malawi, enabling all us to gain a wonderful first-hand insight into the life of a sugar producer in the 21st century – the hardships as well as the rewards.
