What is Fairtrade?

Products with the Fairtrade mark help developing world’s farmers get a better deal. Fairtrade employers pay decent wages, guarantee trade union rights, provide safe working conditions and don’t use child labour.

They guarantee farmers a minimum price for their crops to cover the cost of sustainable production.  And they get an extra premium that goes towards education, clean water, medicine – things that improve their communities.

Who runs Fairtrade?

Fairtrade products display the Fairtrade mark which shows that international Fairtrade standards are met. These standards are set by the international certification body, the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation (FLO).

In the UK the Fairtrade Foundation licences the Fairtrade Mark to products which meet FLO standards. The supplier must sign the Foundation’s Licence Agreement which provides a license to use the Mark.

Fairtrade and Ubuntu Cola

Ubuntu Cola got its Fairtrade Mark on 18 May 2007 because it fizzes with Fairtrade sugar from Kasinthula in Malawi and from Kaleya in Zambia.
